Old Ceramic Fuse Switchboards (Pre-1960s)

Typically found in homes built before the 1960s, these switchboards have an asbestos backboard and ceramic fuses. They are outdated and pose safety risks due to exposed live terminals when replacing fuse wires.

Ceramic fuses do not protect against fatal electric shocks and can create fire hazards if not correctly managed.

Switchboards from the 1960s-1980s

These switchboards often feature miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) instead of fuse wires. While they were a significant improvement at the time, their age now makes them less reliable, with MCBs that may stick or fail to reset.

These boards are over 30 years old and may not trip properly, increasing the risk of electrical faults.

Modern Switchboards

Today’s switchboards are flush-mounted and equipped with RCD protection. They offer a higher level of safety by preventing fatal electric shocks and include MCBs to protect against short circuits and overcurrents.

Can a single power point be changed out to a double power point?
Yes, this is easily done. As long as the orientation stays the same. Sometimes the flush box in the wall needs to be replaced too as the double power point doesn’t always fit. It is possible to change from a vertical power point to a horizontal power point, but patching will be required
I have old style double width switches and power points, can these be upgraded to a modern style?
Switchboard upgrades start from $1500 + GST . This will include:
  • New 30 way recessed switchboard
  • New main switch, 3 RCDs and 11 circuit breakers
  • Inspection
  • Testing
  • Certificate of compliance
There are several factors which determine the cost
  1. Number of sub circuits will determine how many circuit breakers and RCDs need to be installed, which will determine the size of the new switchboard too
  2. Ease of access. If the switchboard is located outside or in a location that doesn’t not meet the current regulations, it may need to move to meet code
  3. The condition of the existing wiring. Sometimes we will need to rewire before we can upgrade the switchboard
  4. Where the electricity meter is located. If it is outside in its own box, the cost of the switchboard upgrade will be less than if the meter is mounted on the switchboard
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
We complete domestic switchboard upgrades within 1 day. The power will usually go off around 8am and power will be reinstated usually by about 5pm. We are unable to provide temporary power during this time as all power coming to the house is turned off. As long as the fridge and freezer are kept shut for the day, there will not be any issues with food going off
