Is Your Home's Wiring Safe?
Unless your home’s wiring has been upgraded by a licensed electrician, it could be as old as your house itself. Outdated wiring, such as VIR (Vulcanised Indian Rubber) and TRS (Tough Rubber Sheath), commonly used before the 1970s, can pose significant risks, including short circuits and fire hazards. More often than not, we find VIR or TRS that has deteriorated and the old rubber has become crumbly which can cause a short circuit or at worst, a fire.
Other common issues with old wiring include:

How long does a rewire take?
A 3-bedroom 1900-1930s villa or bunglow that requires a full rewire should take about 3-4 days for an electrician and an apprentice, depending on what access is like in the ceiling and under the floor
Will the power be off for the whole time?
No. We will only bite off what we can chew each day and get power reconnected before the evening. As wiring is interconnected, sometimes you may lose partial power overnight to a few sockets or lights but this would be worst case scenario and we can usually set you up with extension leads to help you get by.
Will there be holes in the walls that need to be patched?
The age of the house will determine if we need to cut holes. Villas and early bungalows don’t usually have nogs withing the walls and have a lot of ceiling space and floor space. This allows us to drop cabling down inside the walls from above or push them up from below. From about 1940s onwards, nogs were introduced as building styles changed. A nog is a horizontal piece of wood inside the wall which sits between the two vertical studs and provides extra stiffness for the wall. These nogs prevent us from running cabling easily and we will need to drill holes in the wall linings (gib board) to allow us to drill through the nog. This is not included in our quote and will need be be plastered and painted once we are done by yourself or a tradesperson of your choice
How much does a rewire cost?
For a 3 bedroom bunglow or villa that needs a full rewire, you will be looking around $10,000 plus GST. For later homes with nog walls, the price will go up from here as it takes longer to rewire
